Between the lines
Ottawa Sun editorial
We can't help but wonder whether Michaelle Jean, hard-nosed Radio-Canada journalist, would have accepted at face value the kind of bland statement put out yesterday by Michaelle Jean, governor general designate, on the touchy subject of whether or not she's a born-again federalist.
We would have far preferred to hear Jean speak from the heart and tell us in her own words of her commitment to a strong and united Canada, rather than issuing a statement so clearly vetted in the back rooms of the prime minister's office.
Better still maybe she could have agreed to sit down with a journalist and answer the serious questions that have been raised in the past couple of weeks about the background of both Jean and her husband, film-maker Jean-Daniel Lafond.
At first we were inclined to dismiss as mischief making the portrayal of the soon-to-be vice-regal couple as former friends of Quebec separatists. The stories, after all, were being perpetuated by present-day separatists who will say whatever they please if it furthers their goals.
Since the early days of the debate, however, we have seen stronger evidence that Jean and Lafond were at least on good terms with the separatists, including the contents of a 1991 film in which the governor-general designate joins in a toast to "independence" at a gathering in a Montreal bar.
Under growing pressure to clear the air, Jean yesterday issued a brief statement in which she said: "I want to tell you unequivocally that both (Lafond) and I are proud to be Canadian and that we have the greatest respect for the institutions of our country. We are fully committed to Canada. I would not have accepted this position otherwise."
All well and good, but at no point did she deal with the accusations that she and her husband once backed the other side.
Prime Minister Paul Martin, meanwhile, noted that "there is no doubt in my mind that her devotion to Canada is longstanding and resolute. That is why I recommended her for appointment. And that is why she enjoys my unqualified support."
Touching, but not quite the assurance that Canadians want and deserve.
And another thing ...
It must be a government project when the cost balloons to more than 60% above the original estimate.
Our newly renovated Library of Parliament will probably look great, but guess who's on the hook for the additional $50 million? _________________ Watch the Victory Video!!!

If you were to put Paul’s words in her mouth I still wouldn't buy it.
She has to go yet Martin will keep her there so he doesn’t have to admit he screwed up.

| While I am as concerned as everyone else over this I wish the national furor and debate would move away from Madame Jean and on to the bigger issue of getting rid of the Governor General's position period. |

Wishful thinking. Whom do you suggest perform this change of power? Paul Martin?
Either way, we the people still lose. _________________ The opinions expressed by the above poster are his own and do not necessarily reflect the views and opinions of the forum's moderators or owners. Questions and comments can be sent to the boy on the left. |
