Is the New Madrid Fault Earthquake Zone Coming To Life?

Is the New Madrid Fault Earthquake Zone Coming To Life?

End of the American Dream

What in the world is happening in the middle of the United States right now? Thousands of birds are falling dead from the skies, tens of thousands of fish are washing up on shore dead, earthquakes are popping up in weird and unexpected places and people are starting to get really freaked out about all of this. Well, one theory is that the New Madrid fault zone is coming to life. The New Madrid fault zone is six times bigger than the San Andreas fault zone in California and it covers portions of Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee and Mississippi. The biggest earthquakes in the history of the United States were caused by the New Madrid fault. Now there are fears that the New Madrid fault zone could be coming to life again, and if a "killer earthquake" does strike it could change all of our lives forever.

Image

So exactly what events have happened recently that are causing people to take a close look at the New Madrid fault zone? Well, just consider the following examples of things that have been popping up in the news lately....
    * According to the U.S. Geological Survey, more than 500 measurable earthquakes have been recorded in central Arkansas just since September.
    * A magnitude-3.8 earthquake that shook north-central Indiana on December 30th is being called "unprecedented." It was strong enough to actually cause cracks along the ground and it was felt in portions of Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin and Kentucky.
    * More than 3,000 red-wing blackbirds fell out of the sky dead in the Arkansas town of Beebe on New Year's Eve.
    * Large numbers of dead birds were also found in Kentucky right around Christmas.
    * Approximately 500 dead blackbirds and starlings were also recently discovered in Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana.
    * Approximately 100,000 fish washed up dead on the shores of the Arkansas River just last week.

So could all of these things have some other very simple explanation?

Possibly.

But the fact that they all happened in or around the New Madrid fault zone is starting to raise some eyebrows. keep reading

I'm fed up with the west getting all of the "new world" crap! Let China take the earthquakes and super volcano's for a while (about 10 million years).

Re: NEW EARTHQUAKE FAULT TO DIVIDE AMERICA IN HALF???

What a bunch of crockpot! (and I am restraining myself)

Whilst there is no doubt that the New Madrid area is a major fault zone characterized by long periods of virtual inactivity, no event is going to split North America in half in a matter of days, weeks, or even years (short of a meteor strike!).

It took hundreds of millions of years to accrete the Appalachians and the Rockies to the North American craton (a continental core that has remained together for 2,500 million years), I don't think a mystery event will be splitting North America anytime soon (although locally short stretches of coast could sink or rise 4-5m in a matter of minutes, as it happened in Chile, Indonesia and Thailand, rather recently).

As for the commentary (by the way, what a dull voiceover, it sounds like they recorded the audio at their kitchen with a 1980s tape recorder), the Atlantic is not opening along the equator, it is opening along the Mid-Atlantic Oceanic Ridge, a feature running north to south, extruding oceanic crust to the west and to the east.

Bottom line, yes, the New Madrid area may show us a major earthquake within our lifetimes, but the 'documentary' is about as believable (and factual) as Dwayne from the trailer park being appointed ambassador of aliens from Venus (I still found it interesting to watch, Styky; I am just pointing out my opinion).

As for animals and earthquakes... I was in Chile when the big earthquake hit (that was #3 earthquake I felt during my 6 weeks there)... I can verify that in all three occasions the animals freaked out during the earthquake (just like humans), and not before it happened. I cannot say I heard of any strange animal deaths before or after the earthquakes.

I think that fault zone is overdue for a big rumble, but I don't think the birds falling from the sky have anything to do with it. That was reportedly the result of birds eating poison, flying off and dying while in flight. Another theory that had been advanced had to do with severe winds aloft.

Either way, that's not correlated with seismic activity. But it was 200 years ago, almost (the winter of 1811-12) when this fault last had a major earthquake, and I believe it has had a few moderate ones since then. So it probably is overdue but who knows when it might actually let loose?

Same goes for Mount Rainier blowing its top, that could happen some time in the 21st century too.

Sounds like the old "those UFOs are just secret government prototype weather balloons filled with swamp gas and powered by ball lightning" argument. ;)

Apparently we had a small quake here last week. I didn't notice it but I talked to a few people who did. Quakes here are always minor and rare, however we are on the extreme edge of the New Madrid fault.
